Once Upon a Time in Lisbon: The Extraordinary “Editorial Voyages” of Lusitânia Verne 1874-2021
This paper aims to analyze the relationship between the French writer, Jules Verne (1828-1905) and Portugal through three different plans: 1) his two visits to Lisbon in 1878 and 1884, 2) the Portuguese characters and geographies the writer created in his Voyages Extraordinaires and, finally, 3) the history of his edition work in Portugal between 1874 and 2021, according to the bibliographic research we made between April and May 2022, which we present at the end of this article. In the latter plan, for a broader understanding of the Vernian edition in Portugal, it was necessary to reseach the history of the Portuguese book industry in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, through some of its most prominent protagonists, to whom the Jules Verne’s work edition is linked directly (David Corazzi and Justino Guedes) or indirectly (Francisco Alves and Júlio Monteiro Aillaud). We end this paper by asserting that, regarding the current Vernian edition in Portugal, there is still much work to be done in order to publish his entire litterary output.
